An Accra Circuit court presided over by His Honour, Mr. Aboagye Tandoh has sentenced 3 armed robbers to 25 years each for conspiracy to rob, robbery and abetment of robbery.
The first and second accused Hafiz Ali alias ‘send the money’ and Yakubu Shaibu alias ‘Jelilu’ respectively, were charged with conspiracy to rob and robbery. The third accused, Emmanuel Laryea was charged with abetment of robbery.
Hafiz Ali and Yakubu Shaibua who pleaded not guilty are to serve 25 years concurrently for each of the counts they were convicted on.
According to the Judge, the law states that anyone who abetted in a crime was to be sentenced in the same manner as those who committed the crime.
Following this, Emmanuel Laryea who was charged on the count of abetment of robbery was also sentenced to 25 years for abetment of robbery and 25 years for robbery to be served concurrently.
Brief Facts
Kwaku Swanzy Enterprise Limited is a retailer of assorted drinks located at Salvation in Mamprobi. On the 18th July 2017, at about 4:30pm, staff of the company were busily working when six armed men on two motorcycles stopped at the company’s premises.
This was followed with another order for the workers to lie on the floor. The robbers shot the security man of the company, entered the various offices of the company and stole about 3,710 Ghana cedis.
The security man was rushed to the Korle-Bu teaching hospital. He however, died whilst receiving treatment for gunshot wounds.
The third accused person was arrested after a CCTV recording showed him leading the robbers to the offices of the company.
Upon a tip off, the second accused was arrested at Zongo Junction near Abossey Okai whilst the first accused was also arrested upon a tip off.
After his arrest, the third accused was identified as a staff of the complainant’s company.
The accused persons admitted in their caution statement to having committed the offence.
