Five alleged robbers plead not guilty to robbery

Five men have been arraigned before an Accra circuit court for allegedly committing armed robbery crimes from January, 2017, to September, 2017, in Accra.

The accused persons, Kofi Emmanuel Bawumia, Benard Hutchful, Richard Donkor, Michael Osei Kwaku and Bright Twumasi were respectively charged with the counts of conspiracy to commit crime, robbery, possession of narcotic drug without lawful authority and dishonest receipt of a stolen TV.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty on all the counts.

Brief Facts

The Regional Police Command in Accra had been receiving several complaints of robbery attacks in both vehicles and residence of inhabitants living in Accra since the beginning of the year 2017.

The Police Regional Command increased its intelligence gathering to combat the perpetrators of such crimes.

On the 25th September, 2017, the Command had a tip-off of the identity and hide out of the culprits. A team of plain-clothes Policemen were dispatched to Mamprobi and Dansoman, all suburbs of Accra, where the accused persons were arrested.

Several items suspected to have been procured from robbery were retrieved by the Police in the respective homes of the Accused persons. Some of the items included a one stage monitor speaker, one home theatre set, two power stabilizer machine, one Lenovo laptop computer, one 65 inch Sharp television , one Chon plasma 32 inch flat TV set, one Benq plasma 18 inch flat screen TV and one microwave oven.

The Police further found a quantity of dried green plant seedlings suspected to be Indian hemp from Michael Osei Kwaku’s room.

Upon interrogation, they mentioned Bright Twumasi as the sponsor of their robbery activities and the one to whom stolen items were sent.

On the 25th of September, 2017, the Complainant reported a case of robbery where his 42 inch TV set, one wrist watch and cash of 2,400 Ghana cedis were taken from him at his residence at Tuba. The Complainant identified his stolen 42 inch television among the stolen items which were retrieved by the Police from the room of Bright Twumasi at Abelemkpe.

More victims are reporting to the Police as investigations continue.
