Gideon Laryea, a property agent, aged 45 years, has been arraigned before and Accra Circuit Court for defiling his 10-year old niece.
According to the Prosecutor, DSP Adalphina Dzansi, the Complainant, Augusta Owoo, aged 30 years is a trader and lives at Osu, a suburb of Accra with the 10 year old victim who is her daughter.
The Prosecutor narrated that the victim spends her weekends with her paternal grandmother in her family house. The Accused person who is an uncle of the victim also stays in that family house and shares a chamber and a hall with his father.
DSP Dzansi stated that the Accused person often did his laundry on Sundays. Investigations revealed that the Accused person normally invited the victim to sit with him whilst he washed. “There he gives his phone loaded with nude pictures to her to watch. Then at a point he would send the victim to his father’s room suck her breast, insert his finger into her and have sexual intercourse with her”, the Prosecutor said.
According to DSP Dzansi, the victim had endured the ordeals since August 2017 to date. Investigations further revealed that on the 2nd December 2017 at about 10 am, the Complainant, as usual, sent the victim to her grandmother. The Accused called the victim to his washing base and later sent her to the room, unzipped her dress, removed her pants, placed her on the bed, fingered her, sucked her breasts and had another bout of sexual intercourse with her.
The Prosecutor explained that later that evening, the Complainant noticed stains of blood in the victim’s underwear and thought she had had her menstruation. On the 11th December of 2017 at about 6:00 a.m., the Complainant noticed blood stains in the Victim’s underwear again and questioned her as to what was wrong. DSP Dzansi stated that the victim broke down and told the Complainant that the Accused had been fingering her and had sexual intercourse with her anytime the Complainant left her with her grandmother.
According to the prosecutor, the Complainant informed her husband and the Accused person was arrested and sent to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, where an official complaint was made.
“A Police medical report form was issued to Complainant to send the victim to the hospital for examination, treatment and report”, the Prosecutor said.
DSP Dzansi stated that the Accused person in his Caution Statement, admitted inserting his fingers into the Victim’s vagina since August 2017 to date but denied ever assaulting her sexually.
The Accused person who was charged with two counts of defilement, pleaded not guilty to the offences.
The case has been adjourned to 21st December, 2017.
