Samia Nkrumah has called on Parliament to resist any attempt to pass the Plant Breeders Bill into law.

In a Facebook post, Madam Nkrumah said the country must have an agricultural revolution, urging that ‘we must choose organic farming.’ She reiterated that organic farming will enhance biodiversity and protect the health of Ghanaians.

Madam Nkrumah also contended that the country should not depend on expensive imported pesticides adding that ‘we do not need foreign-imposed genetically modified organism (GMO) technology. She also indicated there is no consensus by scientists worldwide that it is safe. She added that many scientifically-advanced countries have abandoned GMOs.

Madam Nkrumah said she is for a revolutionary technology that will enable the country to continue to save and re-use its seeds at the next planting season rather than destroy the country’s traditional breeding systems. She charged Ghanaians to ‘say yes to organic farming and no to GMOs.’
