An Accra Circuit Court presided by His Honour Aboagye Tandoh, has sentenced two labourers, Bright Anikpi and Kofi Seyram Agamah, to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour.
The Accused persons were charged on the count of conspiracy to commit crime to wit robbery and both Accused persons pleaded guilty to the offence.
In reading the facts of the case, the Prosecutor Superintendent Kwaku Bempah narrated that the Complainant is a businessman and resides at Nmai Dzor, a suburb of Accra, whilst the First and Second Accused persons are labourers and live around the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout.
The Prosecutor explained that in the month of August, 2017, the Complainant who has a plot of land very close to his house contracted the services of a building contractor. The said contractor brought the Accused persons as labourers to the site.
According to Superintendent Bempah, the Complainant constructed a simple wooden structure at the site for the Accused persons to live there. Due to this, the Accused persons became familiar with the Complainant and rendered other services to him.
The Prosecutor stated that on 30th of November, 2017, the Accused persons hatched a plan to rob the Complainant. As a result, the First Accused went to Kaneshie and met a witness in the case, and told him that he wanted him to assist them to rob the Complainant. “The witness feigned interest in executing the job. The first Accused brought the witness from Kaneshie to Nmai Dzor, showed him the Complainant’s house and also planned as to how the operation would be conducted”, the Prosecutor stated.
Superintendent Bempah added that the Accused persons again told the witness to rob the Complainant of his brand new BMW saloon car and money.
According to the Prosecutor, on 1st December, 2017, the witness gave information to the Police about the intentions of the Accused persons. The witness later led the police to the Accused persons’ hideout where they had been waiting patiently for the arrival of the Complainant for them to attack and rob him.
Superintendent Bempah stated that the Police arrested the Accused persons. During investigation, they admitted the offense and added that they needed money to celebrate Christmas and to use the rest to further their education.
The judge stated that the sentence given to the Accused persons was to serve as a deterrent to people who engage in similar criminal acts.
